The Big Brave Event & Fundraiser: Come Join the Team!
For those of you who attended the Christmas concerts, you may remember that one of our Grade 5 students, Foster, shared his story with us. Foster was diagnosed with cancer at age 4, and when he began kindergarten at Altadore School, he had just started his 3.5 year chemotherapy treatment. Foster and his family were supported through the Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta.
What is the Kids Cancer Care Foundation?
Kids Cancer Care is a charitable organization that helps children with cancer and their families. From activities like camps for children with cancer and their siblings, to outreach programs for the entire family, they ensure all children living with cancer and their families are supported and connected. Kids Cancer Care also contributes to programs and research at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. You can learn more about Kids Cancer Care here
As someone who personally experienced the many supports Kids Cancer Care offered himself and his family, Foster decided he wanted to give back. We are so pleased Foster brought forward the idea to host “The Big Brave” Event at our school.
What is The Big Brave?
You might remember this fundraising event by its former name: Shave your Lid for a Kid. On Wednesday, February 15, 2023 our school will team up with Mount Royal School to host The Big Brave. Students, staff, and family members can shave, cut, or colour (with temporary spray dye) their hair. Some participants will do this on stage in front of the school during an assembly, with professional Great Clips hairdressers on site. Others will continue to do it at school throughout the morning once the majority of students have returned back to class. If you or someone you know is interested in shaving/cutting/dyeing your hair, you can also raise funds and do it at a time that is more convenient for you.
What do I do next?
If you or you someone you know wants to shave/cut/colour their hair, you will join the Altadore Awesomeness team here. You will set up your online team member profile and ask family, friends, and coworkers to donate to your page.
If you do not want to create your own fundraising page, you can still donate to someone you know at Altadore, or the main Altadore Awesomeness page here.
For those with long hair…
If a participant is able to donate 12 inches or more of hair (as long as it is not bleached or permed), we will be donating the hair to Angel Hair for Kids, which makes custom hair replacements for children. You can learn more about this organization here.
Our goal is to raise $15 000 as a school.
The Grade 5/6 Leadership Club will be talking to all students about this fundraiser and various clubs will be supporting the fundraising efforts by hosting various activities throughout the next month. Please feel free to reach out to Mrs. Lundgren at mllundgren@cbe.ab.caif you have any questions.
Kindergarten Registration
Kindergarten registration for the 2023-24 school year begins on Monday, January 16, 2023. All registration is done online. Click on the registration tab on the Calgary Board of Education website.
Please note that there is no advantage to registering on the first day. We accept all students who live within our catchment area as long as they are registered before the school year starts. That being said, it does help us with planning for next year if children are registered before the end of March. Our school is near capacity which means we are unable to accept students who live outside our boundaries.
We will take note of the families that have a preference for morning or afternoon classes, or that have no preference. If we are not able to accommodate all requests, there will be a lottery in May to determine which students will attend in the morning or the afternoon.
An orientation for parents will be held on Tuesday, May 16 at 6:00 in the school gym.
Please share this information with family, friends, and neighbours who live in our area and who have a child who will go to kindergarten next year.
Fun Lunch
The remaining Fun Lunches for the 2022-2023 school year have been added to Healthy Hunger so parents can order now for the remainder of the year. If you place an order and realize later that your child will not be at school that day, you can cancel your order and receive a credit as long as you cancel 5 days before the Fun Lunch. Our next Fun Lunch (Booster Juice) will be Tuesday, January 17. For those who ordered, please remember to check what you ordered and send snacks/items to complement your child's lunch as necessary. The wraps are small and there are 2 different smoothie sizes.
Volunteer Signup - Volunteer's are still needed to help distribute lunches. Sign up here to help distribute lunches for Grade 1-4 or 5-6. A valid police check is needed.
*Please note* All Grade 4’s will be on a field trip on Feb 7. If you place an order for that day, they will receive it AFTER they return to the school at the end of the day.
School Council
Please join us this Wednesday, January 18 at 6:30 pm in the Learning Commons for our School Council meeting. Our Grade 6 teachers will be presenting at the meeting. Information will be shared about provincial achievement tests, the upcoming report cards, and the math goal of our School Development Plan. Babysitting will be provided. You will also be able to watch and listen in to the meeting here
Fun Fit & Dance Residency….Coming Soon!
We will be having a two day tennis Fun Fit on January 23 & 24. Each class will receive instruction over the two days. In February, we will begin a week-long dance residency with Jackie Soppitt. Students will learn a variety of dance styles over their four sessions.
Food Bank Thanks
Thank you to everyone who donated cereal and/or money to the Pride Vibes Calgary Food Bank drive in December. The military volunteers who picked up our boxes were blown away by the amount of cereal…and grateful the boxes were full of light cereal and not soup cans! We will share the final monetary donation amount once the Food Bank shares it with us, but we can let you know we definitely surpassed our goal of $1000!
Notes of Thanks
Thank you to the following individuals for their recent contributions to our school…
- Thank you to Kim Mwenifumbo for taking down the trees and wreaths and clearing up the front entrance of the school.
- Candace Inkpen, Foster Garrison, Mrs. Lundgren, Mr. Johnson and the Leadership Club students who are helping us plan and organize the Big Brave event that will be happening in February.
