Admin Message
Oki Altadore Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to the second week of school. Students and staff have settled into classroom routines and are actively engaged in learning.
Provincial literacy and numeracy assessments will take place from September 14 to October 2, 2026.
Our first Parent Council meeting of the school year will be held on Wednesday, September 9 at 6:30 PM in Room 7A. Parents who are unable to attend in person may join through Microsoft Teams Meeting. The agenda and meeting link will also be sent through SchoolMessenger on Tuesday, September 8. We encourage all parents to attend this important meeting.
Next week, families will receive the first bi-weekly curriculum update from teachers. These messages will highlight classroom learning and important dates specific to each class.
Have a wonderful week. The next Admin Update will be sent on Sunday, September 20, 2026.
Provincial Literacy and Numeracy Assessment
The Provincial Literacy and Numeracy assessments for Grades 1-5 will begin on September 14 - October 2, 2026. More information will be shared with parents next week in an individual School Message.
One & Done Fundraiser
No bake sales. No apple selling. No “a-thons”.
Here at Altadore School, families are invited to make one donation to The Altadore School Parents Association at the beginning of the school year (and be done with it). A suggested contribution of $200 per child helps fund programs, resources and opportunities for all grades. Donate here.
Picture Day
Picture Day is this Wednesday, September 9. Retakes will take place on October 28, 2026.
School Council Meeting
The first School Council meeting will take place this Wednesday, September 9 from 6:30 - 8:00 pm at the school and online. We encourage all parents to attend. It’s the best way to hear what’s happening at the school and be able to share your feedback as parents! Child care is available on site.
Welcome Back Picnic/Meet the Teacher
Join us for our Welcome Back Picnic this Thursday, September 10 from 5-7pm. Classes will be open for parents and students. We ask that students remain with parents in the school and that we are sensitive to timing to allow everyone an opportunity to visit the classroom and meet their teacher.
We need some help to clean up the field and playground after the picnic from 6:45pm-7:15pm as we want to leave things clean and ready for school on Friday. The time requirement is an estimate, many hands make light work. Sign up to help.
Terry Fox Run
The Terry Fox Run is Thursday, September 24th. We need volunteers from 1:30-2:30 pm to help with setup and takedown and to mark students’ hands as they complete laps around the school field. Please note that volunteers must have a valid, up-to-date police clearance on file with the school. If you’re unsure about the status of yours, please contact the school office. Sign up here.
School Casino (December 17–18, 2026)
Save the dates! Our school casino fundraiser will take place Thursday, December 17 and Friday, December 18. Volunteer opportunities and more details will be shared in October.
Owl’s Nest & Altadore Edible Garden Update
Summer and fall are busy times for the Altadore Edible Garden and Owl’s Nest. Both spaces are a vital part of the school community, utilized for outdoor classroom spaces for all grades throughout the year. This summer over 300 lbs of fresh vegetables have been donated to the Calgary Food Bank. That number will continue to grow as harvesting is ramped up in the fall! If you have any questions about the gardens, please reach out to altadoregarden@gmail.com.
The Owl's Nest Needs You!
Did you know that the Owl's Nest is maintained by volunteers? We are down to one person and need your help! In addition to the seasonal clean ups, there are routine tasks that we could use your help with throughout the year (like weeding, planting, watering, and trimming in warmer months, and shaking snow off branches in the winter). Gardening experience is an asset, but absolutely not required. If you'd like to join the team, or if you just have questions, please reach out to Sarah Whitton.
Hey! Look! Did you notice the important dates?
At the top left of every newsletter (next to the admin update) is a rundown of important upcoming dates! Make a mental note to check it out, so you’re not caught off guard by a day off school or a wacky hair day!
Notes of Thanks
Thank you to the following individuals for their recent contributions to our school…
- All the hard working parent volunteers that help keep the Owl’s Nest and Edible Garden running! Special shout out to Cara Schlenker for her leadership of the Owl’s Nest over the last many years. And, thank you to everyone who helped with the garden clean up!
